Spears shall be shaken. Blood will be spilt. And a hero will rise.
It is 643 AD, and the land that will eventually be known as England is split into fledgeling kingdoms, torn apart by warring kings. Mightiest among these is the tyrant Penda, who, from his seat in Mercia, draws plans for the conquest of the whole of the island of Britain.
In the small southern kingdom of Wessex, a new king brings new changes and new dangers, and it is into this chaos that Redgar, a young Saxon warrior, is thrust. As savage Mercian raiders assault Wessex's borders, tragic consequences force Redgar into a destiny he does not seek. He has few friends and many enemies, chief amongst whom is the ferocious, malevolent Gothic mercenary Uscfrea, who lives to hate and thrives by killing.
As war rages to the north, Redgar must look to his own lands and trust in his sword-arm, for, if his courage fails, so will Wessex.
Based on real events and filled with bloody battles and swashbuckling action, THE RED SAXON is a new breed of historical novel fast, funny and stirring.
This is the first novel in the Adventures of Redgar series.

The Red Saxon The Adventures of Redgar Book 1 edition by Peredur WebbDavies Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Excellent in every respect. "The Red Saxon" is a truly engrossing novel, and one that is both well-researched and superbly written. I cannot wait for the next installment in what I hope will be a long, long series.
A good read, a little transparent at times but entertaining enough to keep you interested. I will read the next one.
Webb-Davies hit the mark with his first book. His effort compares very favorably with Judson Robert's Viking or Bernard Cornwell's Angicort. The story flows with many twists and turns and keeps the reader guessing. I hope that we will see another book from him very soon!
I haven't finished this yet but I wanted to share something before you buy. Be aware that although this story is set in the dark ages the characters use terms and colloquialisms common to a 19th century British regiment stationed in India rather than Saxon warriors during the dark ages. The exclamatory words Bollocks and bloody are used frequently. Referring to fellow warriors as lads is common. Probably not terms used by Saxon warriors at that time in history. The same with relationships between the characters. Not really appropriate to the dark ages and more so to the 19th and 20th. If historically accurate terminology and relationships are important factors perhaps you should skip this one.
Webb-Davies has done very well with The Red Saxon. The plot is interesting while also maintaining historical accuracy. Though the battle scenes were a bit too detailed for my personal taste, I still very much enjoyed the story. Extra kudos to Webb-Davies for managing to move the plot forward without relying on dragons or zombies, which is certainly a plus these days. The story leaves the reader begging for the next installment, so hopefully it will be out soon.
Great book, read it from start to finish without losing interest. Given the amount of action in the book, it would probably be hard to lose interest anyways! Pretty much in-your-face kind of action. It can be a bit gory at times, but I suspect the author is going more for realism than anything else. Some historical notes at the end are useful in putting things into context.
It's always a bonus when the editing was pretty tight. Doubly so for a self-published debut novel. I think the only error I noticed was "he" for instead of "she" or something insignificant like that. I didn't notice if the author had a professional editor behind him, but it certainly has that polish.
I will hope for more adventures of Redgar.
